"The focus of the Brother HL-2140 is clear, and as a good little text churner this laser packs the goods. Use it extensively and, in the long-term, you'll end up paying considerable amounts. But for the typical family, this is an excellent complement to a quality inkjet and thus an ideal way to arm your home with strong text to go along with great colour graphics."

"This is a well-designed, smart, personal, mono laser printer, which does most of the things you could want of a one-per-desk machine. If we were picky, we'd like a multi-purpose tray that can take more than one sheet at a time, and a toner cartridge with at least the same capacity as the standard-yield consumable available as a spare.
Running costs are high using the manufacturers' SRPs, but hardly anyone ever pays these rates and we would expect to see a noticeable reduction when the printer is launched, early in January, 2008.

"Strengths: Fast. Low per page cost. Toner save mode @ 300-dpi prints highly acceptable documents (to extend toner life)

Weaknesses: High electricity usage. Manual feed port doesn't have a tray to support the manual feed pages.

Overall Evaluation: If you want a low cost per page, fast laser printer for basic printing needs, this fits the bill perfectly. The only drawback is the higher than average electricity usage. Given my 3 monitors, computer, and various other items in my home office, my battery backup cycles every time I turn the printer on and at various times during printer standby mode. It is rated around 4 amps average during print mode. The supply on the back states a max draw of 8.6 amps although I don't think it would ever hit that mark.Other than that, the cost per page is fairly low if you go with the high yield toner TN360 (I think it's around 1.8 cents per page up to 12000 pages when you need to buy a new drum which also isn't too expensive). But still an arm & leg cheaper than running any typical inkjet printer. Overall, I am highly satisfied but docked it 1 star because of the high electric usage.

"Pros: Well, the obvious caveat here is that this is not a printer that is designed for high volume service. In a home or small business where the printer is used as Brother suggests, you will be rewarded with fast delivery of clean and crisp documents, day after day. As a bonus, the toner cartridge that comes with the printer can be refilled to the high-volume TN-360 cartridge spec. With a little looking around on the net, you'll find several places where you can buy the toner and required "Reset Gear" kit... for well under $20. With a couple of 2000+ page refills under your belt, and the saved money in your pocket, you'll be very glad you chose this quick little printer.

Other Thoughts: OK, so when the printer starts a print job, it may startle the cat that was snoozing on top. The print process is a little noisy. However, the start-up, print and return to sleep cycle is very short. When sleeping, the printer is stone quiet and using very little power.
